What is Shotcrete (Gunite)
Shotcrete, also known as gunite or sprayed concrete, is a type of high-strength concrete applied through high-pressure spraying. It is projected using a nozzle, which is the end of the concrete transport hose.
During application, it forms a concrete layer on an existing surface with a high concentration of cement and other aggregates. The spraying process not only enables coating on vertical or sloped surfaces but also ensures strong adhesion to the existing concrete.
Its use enhances the structural integrity of elements and seals them to prevent further corrosion caused by water or moisture exposure. It is primarily used to reinforce structural elements with significant issues, tunnels, or hard-to-reach areas.
Shotcrete Application Methods
Dry-Mix Application
The concrete is prepared on-site. The components are mixed and placed into the spraying machine. The required amount of water is added right before spraying.
Wet-Mix Application
In this method, the mixing takes place at a concrete production facility using dry ingredients and water. The mix arrives ready at the site. Sometimes, special additives such as accelerators, retarders, or fibers made of steel, polypropylene, or glass are added to prevent cracking during the curing process.
The price of shotcrete is determined by the thickness of the application layer, and a thorough cleaning of the surface is required before application.
